Amy Kohnstamm for Portland Public Schools

When parent and equity activist Amy Kohnstamm took on a three-term incumbent of the Portland Public School Board, it was a tall task. Having been twice reelected by at least 63% and serving in leadership of the Board and the statewide school boards association, the incumbent had built a strong base of support. But Amy was undaunted, working hard to raise the resources, get out the message, and set higher expectations for the performance of the District. We helped her navigate a difficult campaign as a first-time candidate and come out on top. Amy prevailed, despite being outspent by 50% in the campaign, and has gone on to serve as chair of the Board.
